The Perfect Jeans for Every Body Shape
Shopping for jeans is high on the list of hard-to-shop-for items, with lots of choices to choose from, it can be hard to know where to begin and what fits you might like the most. Your perfect jeans work hard across all areas in your wardrobe for most months of the year, so they are worth the time investing in. Read on for a guide to what denim styles work well for common body types and where to find them.
The high-rise jeans work for all body types, from an hourglass to a pear to a lean, athletic build, working particularly well for those with a long torso. High rise denim gives you instant waistline definition, perfect if you enjoy tucking in tops or wearing longline blazers. They’ll elongate your legs and streamline the mid section and hips, while giving you the feeling of structure and security around the lower tummy and back. A bonus is that there are high rise styles available suited to the fit you prefer in the legs, including a skinny fit, straight fit or slim fit.
Much like the high rise, mid rise jeans work to give you structure around the mid section, define your waistline and are a commonly the most preferred rise for many bodies. These work across all shapes, including hourglass shapes, pear shapes and athletic body types. They are the most commonly available rise for jeans and often come in varying fits through the legs, including a skinny, straight, slim or boyfriend fit.

The much loved skinny leg jeans haven’t always been a staple in our wardrobes, but since trending around 2005 and becoming a staple item following years of boot cut jeans, the skinny leg style has stuck around. With more relaxed cuts trending more recently, skinny leg jeans still have a purpose in most wardrobes. They are ideal for tucking into boots or for streamlining the bottom half of an outfit. They work to create balance, especially when wearing a long coat, sleeves with heavy shoulder detail or a puffer jacket. Working for hourglass, pear shaped and athletic body types, the skinny leg jeans remain a staple.
Significantly more relaxed than a skinny leg, but not as wide as straight fit, slim leg jeans are a happy medium. They give us a streamlined bottom half, meaning the option for a more detailed top or long-line jacket are still easy to style with a slim fit jean. But, they give a little more comfort and breathability than a more fitted style, particularly great for warmer weather. These are a super flattering cut for all body types. A slim fit tends to hug the hips and upper thighs and then slightly relax through the lower thigh through to the ankle. Look for a mid rise waist and an ankle cropped style for the most flattering length.
More relaxed than a slim fit, the straight fit works great on athletic shapes and hourglass and pear shapes with height. Straight fits are generally more relaxed through the thighs and calves. Look for a style in a mid to high-rise and a length that sits around the ankle.

These are the most relaxed fitting denim there is right now, and they are a great casual staple for everyday weekend wear. Look for these in lighter weight denim so that the fabric falls comfortably, skimming your body. Boyfriend fits usually come in a low to mid-rise and are relaxed from the waist through the legs and to the ankle. Cuff the bottoms to add some shape. These are great for long and lean bodies and athletic builds.
